A cooling rack is the best way to prevent your oven from becoming too hot. You can use them in many different ways, including baking cookies or roasting vegetables. Cooling racks also serve as an easy and convenient place to cool food after cooking it on the stovetop or in the oven so that you don’t have to wait for it to cool down by itself.
This is a great addition to any kitchen. If you’re not sure which one best suits your needs, then this article will help guide you in choosing the best cooling rack for your home!
What Is A Cooling Rack?
A cooling rack is a metal frame that has cooling spaces with the intention of allowing air to pass between them. They look like an open mesh grid. The reason for using one is so that foods can cool without the danger of them becoming soggy or drooping. They are typically used for cakes, pies, doughnuts, hamburger buns, and roast chicken halves among others.
These racks are designed for the purpose of cooling baked goods and reducing condensation. They increase airflow and allow air and moisture to move around and out of your prepared food. Many come with a non-stick coating, making them easy to keep clean.
They can be made out of metal or silicone. Most are sold in rectangular shapes, but options include round varieties as well.

How To Choose the Best Cooling Rack
If you’re like me, I hate when my baked goods stick to the cooling racks while they are cooling. There is nothing worse than baking a batch of cookies and coming out with half of them stuck to the rack and having to eat them all because your husband ate the rest (he’s such a jerk sometimes).
Well, here are some ways on how I choose which best cooling rack will be right for my next purchase.
Check your recipes so you know how big or little you want your racks. Some are very small, but if you have a particularly large recipe, size does play an important factor in this selection process. We don’t want too many broken cookies now, do we?
A common one is aluminum racks, which are crappy because they tend to bend or warp over time. Also, there are too many complaints about how hard it is to clean up. Some say that burnt-on sugar can be hard to remove. I don’t want to spend all day trying to scrub away charred sugar!
Plastic is okay, not the best but okay. The problem once again with plastic is it tends to warp after the time of use which makes me just not like this material for my cooling racks.
Stainless steel is awesome! It’s easy to clean (I’ve seen videos where you simply run water over the top, wait a minute or so and wipe off), sturdy (doesn’t warp or bend!), good-sized holes in the rack where small bits will fall through but nothing bigger than normal-sized food particles will fall down without some serious leaning on them. And it rarely warps, which I find awesome. Some say stainless steel can be hard to clean sometimes though…but the best thing about stainless is if you do have a little burnt sugar stuck somewhere on your rack, grab one of those green scrubby pads and lightly rub it over the area until its gone!
Silicone racks are awesome because they are super easy to clean (run water over them), but they also are heat resistant so when you are cleaning up that burned sugar after something like cinnamon rolls or baked apples, you don’t have to worry about scraping with great force as to not melt the silicone right off the rack. However, there have been some complaints of poor quality with some lower-priced models where the silicone comes out of the metal holding it on. But higher-quality ones are great.
Now I know a lot of people who have wooden racks and say they love them… but there is one downside, it is very hard to clean up food particles from big baked goods because if you lay anything too big on these racks, bits will fall through the slats, so whatever falls down may not be usable anymore just in case someone else eats them! So that’s kind of a bummer…
Plus if you have any juices from your meat/poultry drip into the wood while cooking, then you have to worry about splinters when eating since wood tends to absorb all kinds of yucky smells and flavors from what has been cooked before!
All of the cooling racks I purchase are non-stick coated. This is probably one of the most important features to me. I don’t like how my baked goods, or other items that may need cooling, stick to the rack and then chip off into crumbs when you try to pry it off (because of cornbread).
I like to purchase racks that can withstand high heat and won’t be affected by it. One time I purchased a cooling rack that got slightly warped in the oven. So when I would place my items on it they would roll off of it, so frustrating!
23 Ways To Use Cooling Racks
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a cooling rack for?
The cooling rack is something that most bakers have in their kitchen. The idea behind this gadget is to let the air circulate freely around your baked goods, so they stay crispy on the edges and prevent them from becoming soggy. It can also be used for non-baking purposes, e.g., you could use it to cool down homemade doughnuts or pastries.
2. What can I use instead of a cooling rack?
A cooling rack makes removing baked goods from the oven easy, but what do you use if you don’t have one? The trick is to line your baking pan with tin foil. This allows the air to circulate underneath the food, which keeps it from getting soggy. You can also bake directly on a metal or glass oven-safe plate—no parchment needed!
If you must use a metal cooling rack for some reason (perhaps because the rim of your baking sheet is too high), be sure to place it above another inch or two of water in your roasting pan; this will act as an insulator between your food and the hot steam that rises up when you transfer your cake, cookies, etc. to wire racks once they’re finished baking.
3. Are cooling racks safe for oven use?
The answer to your question is yes. If the cooling rack of steel is high-quality stainless, then it will work perfectly for you!
We’ve done the research for you and compiled a list of the 10 best cooling racks on the market today. These are all great options that will work well in your kitchen, but there is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to choosing a rack.
